This is why keeping your phone on doesn’t work.

A pilot is going viral after answering a question on every passenger’s mind: why do we have to put our smartphones in airplane mode before takeoff? He explained why this precaution is so important in a video PSA with about 2 million views on TikTok.

“The airplane mode button on your phone is not a conspiracy,” the pilot, who goes by @perchpoint on the tarmac, stated in the footage.

“It’s certainly not the end of the world, but it’s pretty annoying when you’re trying to copy down instructions and it sounds like a wasp or something is flying around,” the captain (pictured) stated in the clip. TikTok/perch point

The pilot began the video by reassuring viewers that forgetting this protocol “will not cause the aircraft to “fall out of the sky” or even “tamper with the onboard systems.”

However, if too many pilots skip this step, it could accidentally disrupt the pilots’ radio communications with the control tower, the clip shows.

“If you have a plane with 70, 80, 150 people on board, and even three or four people’s phones try to connect to a radio tower for an incoming phone call, it sends out radio waves,” the captain explained. . “There is a possibility that these radio waves could interfere with the radio waves of the headset that the pilots are using.”

He recalled a recent flight where he was using his headset to “get clarity on which way to go” and the interference from the message made him feel like there was a “mosquito” in his ear.

“It’s certainly not the end of the world, but it’s quite annoying when you’re trying to copy instructions and it sounds like a wasp or something is flying around,” the TikTokker said. “So if you’re ever curious about why you need to turn on airplane mode, this is why.”

US law even requires passengers to put their phones on airplane mode while flying.

“Mobile telephones installed in or carried on board aircraft, balloons or any other type of aircraft shall not be used while such aircraft are in the air (not touching the ground),” the code reads federal regulations. “When an aircraft leaves the ground, all mobile phones on board that aircraft must be turned off.”
